About the woodturner...
After years of casual woodworking, including making canoes, kayaks, and some furniture, I discovered woodturning in retirement. It has turned out to be a source of great fun and satisfaction.
I’ve chosen bowls as my primary specialty, and focused on using native woods of many species. I especially enjoy making objects that are at least somewhat useful rather than simply art pieces. When I can, I retain the bark on a turning to give it a natural edge. I also try to do a lot of work with wyes (tree crotch wood) to show off the unusual grain pattern, and with burls, which has grain going every which way, including circles.
One of the most exciting aspects of this craft is discovering the beauty in each piece of wood as it is shaped on the lathe.
